In The Navy Boot Camp

The navy boot camp is the place of training for cadets and recruits who are eyeing enlistment in the navy wing of the armed forces. The navy boot camp, similar to its counterparts in the other fields of army service, puts premium on physical health, well being, strength and endurance. It is wise to expect intense physical training inside a navy boot camp and wiser to train for it before navy boot camp starts to help in the conditioning of the body.

The US Navy has only one boot camp, the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. This center is on the west coast of Lake Michigan, between Chicago and Milwaukee. It processes more than 54,000 recruits applying for the Navy Boot Camp every year. Like other military boot camps, it adheres to the 'no-smoking' policy as well as the prohibiting of over-the-counter medication.

One of the characteristics of the US Navy boot camp is that majority of its activities and exercises are held indoors, including marching, drills, confidence courses and weapons training. Unlike army and air force boot camps, the navy boot camp in the US does not keep the civilian clothing of the recruit to return after the duration of the training. Cadets are instead given the option to send it back home or give it to charity.

Inside the navy boot camp, cadets will be trained on a variety of topics, including damage control, seamanship, first aid, uniforms and grooming, and phonetic alphabet. Basic swimming skills are not taught at navy boot camp since it is a necessity for one to be able to qualify for entrance; however, advanced swimming skills including rescues are taught. Navy boot camps can also require one to memorize navy rank and ratings, the 11 General Orders for a Sentry, the Navy Chain of Command, and the Navy Core Values.

Navy boot camps are featured in many films, including the navy boot camp where actor Cuba Gooding Jr trained to be a deep sea diver in the movie A Few Good Men.
